Preamble
The SET PASSWORD statement is used to change a user password in a MySQL database.
Syntax to change the password with the SET PASSWORD statement in MySQL
SET PASSWORD [ FOR user_name ] = SET PASSWORD
{PASSWORD('text_password1')
| OLD_PASSWORD('text_password2')
| 'encrypted_password'};
Parameters and arguments of the statement
- FOR user_name – optional. This is the user whose password you want to change. If user_name is not specified, the password will be changed for the current user (see CURRENT_USER function).
- PASSWORD (‘text_password1’) is the first method to set a password. It uses the PASSWORD function to take a text string found in text_password1 and generate a hashed password (using MySQL 4.1+ hashing methods).
- OLD_PASSWORD (‘text_password2’) is the second way to set a password. It uses the OLD_PASSWORD function to take the plaintext string found in text_password2 and generate the hashed password (using hashing methods up to MySQL 4.1).
- encrypted_password is the third method to set a password. A password that is already encrypted using the identification method for a user account that does not need to be changed further.
Note:
- The FOR user_name parameter should be specified in the format user_name@host_name, for example, ‘samvyl’@’localhost’.
An example that shows how to use the SET PASSWORD statement in MySQL
For example, if you want to update a user named samvyl with the password on klondike, you have to run the following SET PASSWORD statement in MySQL:
SET PASSWORD FOR 'samvyl'@'localhost' = PASSWORD('klondik');
If you want to reset a password using hashing methods to MySQL 4.1, you must change the SET PASSWORD statement as follows:
SET PASSWORD FOR 'samvyl'@'localhost' = OLD_PASSWORD('autumn');
If the new password has already been encrypted, you can use the SET PASSWORD operator as follows:
SET PASSWORD FOR 'samvyl'@'localhost' = '*39C549BDECFBA8AFC3CE6B948C9359A0ECE08DE2';
