Preamble
In Oracle, the WHILE LOOP cycle will be executed as long as the condition is true.
Syntax of the WHILE LOOP operator
WHILE condition
LOOP
{...}
END LOOP;
Operator parameters and arguments
- condition – The condition is checked in every cycle. If the condition is set to TRUE, the cycle is executed. If the condition is set to FALSE, the cycle stops.
- Code – The code that is executed at each run of the cycle.
Note:
The WHILE LOOP loop is used when you are not sure how many times you want to use the loop body.
Since the condition is calculated before executing the loop, it is possible that the loop body will never be executed.
Consider the example of using WHILE LOOP in Oracle / PLSQL
WHILE monthly_value <= 4000
LOOP
monthly_value := daily_value * 31;
END LOOP;
In this example, the WHILE LOOP loop will end as soon as monthly_value exceeds 4000 as specified:
WHILE monthly_value <= 4000
The WHILE LOOP cycle is executed while monthly_value <= 4000. And as soon as monthly_value>4000, the loop will complete its execution.
